"O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo". A Night Out with William Shakespeare.

It's been a busy and great week and since time passes so quickly we try to use our time to full capacity. Yesterday, the Royal Shakespeare Company staged - what is possibly William Shakespeare's most well-known tragedy - "Romeo and Juliet" at the Theatre Royal in the city centre of Newcastle. The Royal Shakespeare Company is a theatre company which is mainly based in Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford-upon-Avon. However, they are also located in Newcastle and London. The play was very good and surprinsingly close to the original text which made it easy to follow. However, the actors added some special features to the play. Whenever there was a fight, the actors would start a rhythmic tap-dance, holding up their wodden sticks (their swords) which they would then use as a means to coordinate their dance. I think I don't have to say much about the plot. The story focuses on the battle between the two Veronian families, the Capulets and Montagues. When Romeo, a Montague fells in love with Juliet, a Capulet, both meet their fate. The classic balcony scene in which they both declare their love to each other probably contains the most famous line of Romeo and Juliet, "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" spoken by Juliet, lamenting the fact that Romeo is a Montague and therefore her enemy. The Theatre Royal is a small theatre and the audience is always close to the stage, no matter where you are seated.
Although our seats were supposed to be limited in view there was no limitation in view. After the show the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions to the actors which gave us some interesting insight into the production of the play.
